What Is Single Definition?

Single Definition is the most self-contained of all definition types. All defined centers in the chart form one continuous, connected circuit — there are no gaps, no splits, nothing missing. The energy flows in an unbroken loop from one defined center to the next. This creates a person with a remarkably consistent and reliable energetic quality. Single Definitions operate independently; they do not rely on other people to "complete" their circuitry or make them feel whole.

How Single Definition Energy Flows

The Circuit Architecture

In a Single Definition chart, every defined center is linked to at least one other defined center through a defined channel. The result is a single, unified energy field that operates consistently regardless of who the person is around. There is no variability in how the energy moves — it moves the same way in a crowd as it does in solitude. This consistency is the defining characteristic of Single Definition.

Living with Single Definition

Single Definitions tend to feel most comfortable operating from their own internal rhythm. They rarely feel "off" around other people — their circuitry is self-completing, so the presence or absence of bridging people has little effect on their energetic functioning. They are often seen as reliable and consistent, someone who shows up the same way regardless of the environment. However, this consistency can sometimes read as rigidity. Single Definitions may find it harder to adapt to sudden change or to understand why others need more time, more input, or more processing.

The Single Definition Experience

Strengths

The great strength of Single Definition is consistency. You know what you get with a Single Definition person — they are the same person today as they will be tomorrow. This reliability is enormously valuable in every area of life: work, relationships, leadership, and creative output. Single Definitions also have a strong, unambiguous sense of self. They are rarely confused about who they are or what they want. Their inner authority operates clearly and without interference from others.

Challenges

The main challenge of Single Definition is inflexibility. Because the energy circuit is always complete, Single Definitions can struggle to understand why others need bridging, conditioning, or external input to make decisions. They may unconsciously project their own consistency onto people with split circuitry, expecting others to "just know" as they do. Additionally, Single Definitions can be resistant to change — not from fear, but simply because their energy has a natural momentum that prefers its established groove.

Single Definition & Decision-Making

How Your Definition Affects Your Authority

For Single Definitions, the inner authority (whether Sacral, Emotional, Splenic, Self-Projected, Ego, or Lunar) operates cleanly and directly. There is no interference from the need to bridge gaps or wait for external completion. The authority speaks, and the signal is clear. This directness can be a gift — Single Definitions often have an almost uncanny ability to know what is right for them without needing to process extensively.

Single Definition in Relationships

In relationships, Single Definitions are consistent partners. They bring the same energy regardless of the relational context, which can feel grounding and safe to others. However, they should understand that their partners — particularly those with Split or Triple Split Definition — may need different kinds of processing and bridging. What feels obvious and clear to a Single Definition may require significant more time and external input for a split-definition partner.

Single Definition Experiments

Human Design is a self-awareness tool. These experiments help you explore what your Single Definition actually feels like in practice.

Experiment 1

Notice how your energy and clarity remain consistent regardless of environment or company — this is your Single Definition in action.

Experiment 2

Practice patience with people who need more time to process decisions; their circuitry completes differently than yours.

Experiment 3

Observe moments when you assume others "just know" the same things you do — this is a signature Single Definition projection.

Experiment 4

Experiment with consciously slowing down in decision-making, even when your answer feels immediate and obvious.
