Definition describes how your defined centers connect to each other in your bodygraph. It determines whether you are self-contained, relationship-seeking, or community-driven — and it profoundly shapes how you make decisions, interact with others, and move through the world.

Definition is determined by looking at how the defined (colored) centers in your bodygraph connect through defined channels. If all defined centers connect in a single, unbroken circuit, you have Single Definition. If there are two disconnected groups, you have Split Definition. Three groups is Triple Split, and four groups is Quadruple Split.
Your Definition type shapes your relationship to consistency, conditioning, decision-making, and other people. It is one of the first things a Human Design analyst examines when reading a chart — and it appears in every chart result because it directly affects how to interpret everything else.

How Definition Connects to the Rest of Your Design
Definition & Inner Authority
Your definition type directly affects how your inner authority operates. Single Definitions have the clearest, most immediate access to their authority. Split and Triple Split Definitions must be more vigilant about not making decisions only when the split is bridged. Quadruple Splits benefit most from waiting and moving through many environments before deciding.
Definition & Relationships
The more components in your definition, the more your energy and clarity are shaped by who you are with. Single Definitions are least affected by others. Split Definitions seek specific bridging people. Triple Splits need a community. Quadruple Splits require a rich, varied environment of people to feel fully alive. None of these is better or worse — each is simply a different way of being human.
